Ongoing Programs

At Kids Developmental Therapy, we strive to provide the best possible care to our patients who receive speech, occupational, and physical therapy.

Kids Developmental Therapy believes that the best way to achieve a child’s therapy goals is by combining efforts through strong parental support, skilled and caring therapy techniques, and by having lots of fun! Please take a look at some of the activities and programs we have that emphasize family, therapy and fun!

We work with the children and their families to make therapy fun as well as motivate maximum participation. Some examples of the programs we offer in conjunction with our associated Outpatient Clinics are Sailing Days, Parenting Classes, and Sensory-Friendly Nights at the Children’s Museum of Houston.

Constructing a Varied Diet

KDT patients can benefit from the KDC clinics’ eight-week feeding program. It targets picky eaters and addresses oral motor and sensory issues that cause fear and rejection of non-routine feeding experiences. The program involves Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists leading a multi-sensory peer group and providing parent education.

Houston Ballet Class

The Houston Ballet completed a five-week class at KDC clinics for KDT patients, which is free. The class, part of the Houston Ballet Community Outreach Program, is called “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” movement class. It teaches patients about body movement and spatial awareness, as well as words describing movement.

Exceptional Parenting Class

KDC and ESCAPE partner to present a free 7-week class series for KDC/KDT parents at four locations. Open to all interested families, ESCAPE Family Resources Center offers a variety of parenting classes, including the Exceptional Parenting class for parents of children with special needs. These classes provide resources to address emotional needs, celebrate unique qualities, plan for challenges, and teach self-advocacy. Parents must apply to participate, and classes are available in Spanish with childcare provided.

Full of Life—Pediatric Weight Management Camp

KDC helps families create healthy lifestyles for children with weight issues through a research-based, family-focused program. The program is monitored by the child’s pediatrician and run by therapists. Our Physical Therapist runs a camp where families can establish a healthy lifestyle, lose weight, adopt fitness routines, develop positive attitudes, and learn about fitness and exercise components. Call our office for information and to join the waiting list.

SEED (Stimulating and Enhancing Early Development)

Kids Developmental Clinic offers SEED, an eight-week program for at-risk babies and parents. SEED enhances the parent-baby bond during early development. Our therapists assess each baby for motor, feeding, communication, and sensory delays. They provide activities and training to address these issues. Each one-hour session emphasizes the importance of touch, movement, play, nurturing, safety, and family life for healthy development. Families complete the program with knowledge and tools to support their child’s ongoing development.

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)

Kids Developmental Therapy recognizes the therapeutic benefits of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) for children. We partner with trained animals and their handlers to support children in achieving their speech, occupational, and physical therapy goals. Our affiliation with top animal-assisted therapy programs in the Greater Houston Area allows children to enhance various skills, such as strength, coordination, language, daily activities, and social interactions. The animals also provide a calming effect and reduce stress. Moreover, an AAT dog adds an element of fun while children work on challenging therapy skills.

Theatre Under the Stars Outreach Programs

Kids Developmental Therapy partners with KDC and TUTS for musical performances, where our patients shine as stars. We offer an adapted music and movement program inspired by TUTS, helping patients work on speech, occupational, and physical therapy goals through music.

Under therapists’ guidance, patients learn, rehearse, and perform musical numbers for parents. Successful past shows include “High School Musical” and annual Holiday performances. Our ongoing music and movement program fosters collaborative therapy activities focused on music.

Sailing Days

Captain Dave McCabe and his Crew from Sailing Angels Foundation take our KDT Crew (patients) sailing in Kemah on a regular basis. The children have fun learn knot-tying, navigation and piloting of the sailboat. We are planning ongoing sailing days in the near future. All our patients are invited to participate with one parent/caregiver.

Orthotics/Wheelchair Clinic

As a convenience to our patients and to allow better continuity of care with other health care providers, KDT in conjunction with Kids Developmental Clinic provide a regularly scheduled orthotics and wheelchair clinic at the KDC clinics. To ensure the most appropriate, best-fitting equipment, equipment supplier representatives and orthotists come to KDC to consult with the patient, family, and therapist.
